My goal is to help people change in meaningful and lasting ways
by helping them understand how their thoughts, feelings and
actions relate to each other. Being able to tap into each allows you
to respond more flexibly and effectively to people and problems.
I'm sure you know people who react with their emotions before
thinking about what they're doing or saying (leading to
impulsivity). Other people may not be able to access their feelings
about a situation. They react with what might be rational but which
doesn’t take into account the emotional consequences of their
decision. Being caught in either can block the ability to see the
bigger picture or to see other possibilities. We all carry the wisdom
to make decisions that are right for us, but sometimes get stuck
using the same pattern to respond to every situation and fail to see
alternative ways of responding.
You may know that what you’re doing isn’t working, but you don’t
know what to do differently. Being more conscious of the patterns
you engage in can help to open up opportunities to make better
choices. Better choices move you closer to your goals and toward
getting what you want out of your life, job and your relationships.
My style is a balance of gentle confrontation, collaboration and
active listening. I am direct in offering guidance, insight and
problem solving strategies while helping clients reach their own
conclusions.
There are several methods or approaches that I use, depending on
what you want to accomplish in treatment. The first uses a more
time-limited psychotherapy to help people resolve crisis situations
and build stronger coping skills. This can bring symptom relief for
such common problems as sleep difficulties, depression, and
anxiety.
I am also experienced in longer term, insight-oriented
psychotherapy that may include uncovering trauma, anger, and
fears from the past that are affecting the way you live and make
decisions today.
Please note that I treat primarily adult individuals. If you need a
therapist for child, family, or couples counseling I'd be happy to
provide you with referrals.
